It has become very difficult for many people to visiting their local dental office and keep up with their dental health on a regular basis, and for most people having their teeth extracted is the worst it gets, particularly wisdom teeth. Some people are afraid , they do not find the time, or the necessity until they have severe pain and discomfort.

When it comes to wisdom teeth there will be the lucky few that will  never develop them , the lucky few  that  will develop their  wisdom teeth coming in properly, healthy, and  will never  experience problems. For others, wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that usually come in towards their late teen and  early twenties. Sometimes these wisdom teeth can be uncomfortable due to the fact that  they  come misaligned and must require removal.

Often  the Dentist will  determined that the wisdom teeth are problematic and my cause future complications like , gum tissue irritation and bone loss, teeth shifting, cyst and tumors among other complications if not removed on time. The wisdom tooth extraction will be performed by a general dentist or an oral surgeon depending on how complicated the removal can be. Most people will be able to have  them extracted with just the local anesthesia but there are the few that will not chose to go through the process while they are awake  and will opt for being put into a sleepy state where pain signals are blocked so they have little or no memory of having the wisdom teeth extracted.

Recovering from having your wisdom teeth extracted will generally last a few days; you can take painkillers as prescribed and follow guide lines provided by your Doctor. Some of the recommendations will be to:

  • Relax after surgery
  • Try using an ice pack on the outside of your cheek
  • Do not smoke for at least 3 days after your surgery
  • After the first day, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to reduce swelling and relieve pain
  • Do not use a straw for the first few days. Sucking on a straw can loosen the blood clot and delay healing

Following your Doctors recommendations will always make a better recovery process and to maintain a positive history of dental health my best recommendation will be make and appointment with your Dentist of choice and find out about your wisdom teeth so that you can eliminate any uncertainty and avoid any future oral complications.
